Mr. Hollands Opus: a studio musician would have a better chance of comp
One thing that I find curious about this film is that Mr. Holland wants to be a famous composer, and yet, seems to hate the idea of being a studio musician. Now, I’m pretty sure that being a studio musician would put one in a much better position to become a famous composer than being a music teacher. If you read the liner notes on CDs, you’ll see that, sometimes, studio musicians co-write the songs on the album, and sometimes those musicians are also the producer of the album. It seems like, just being in an environment where music is being recorded, and sold would increase your odds of getting your music heard and recorded. As a further example of the benefits of being a studio musician, back in the 70’s, there were a band of studio musicians named The Section. These four guys played on so many albums together, that there were eventually allowed to record a few albums under their own name. So being a studio musician definitely has its benefits. Taking all that into consideration, it just seems weird to me that Mr. Holland would have no interest in being a studio musician, when his overall goal was to get his music heard.
