That when Mr. Holland's son was born and Holland ran to the maternity ward and tried to find where his son was that he had to read the nurse's lips since later on the kid turned out to be deaf?

You're most likely correct. I was just wondering if that was a very subtle hint put in to see if the audience would pick up on it or not. Perhaps I was overthinking it.
