Did Mary just kind of forget about that whole 'Dick's married' thing?

She never gets any kind of explanation for what happened, nor any indication that Dick "divorced" the wife, that she "died," etc. So why is she willing to come back to him several episodes later? She might have forgiven him, sure, but there would still be the problem that he's unavailable ... or so it would seem.

He did mention something about fake divorce lawyers. We can probably assume that she figured they got the divorce. But being as Dick was never actually married he would not really have to actually expedite a divorce. Dick was only "married" because Sally, Harry, and Tommy came back and said she was his wife. Because they originally said the mother burned up on re-entry it stands to reason that Tommy never established her in their documentation. Besides that Tommy only made their identities go back something like six years before they arrived on Earth. They could pretty much say whatever they wanted about his "marriage" since none of it was ever legal to begin with.

Good question. I just watched these episodes again on DVD.

I think it's just a case of writing themselves into a corner.

Personally, I'm one of those people who get annoyed by unexplained or contradictory loose ends, but there seems to be what might be called "sitcom license"-- the producers/writers come up with something that gets the job done for the moment, and expect viewers will go along.

As Mystery Science Theater 3000 puts it, "It's just a show, I should really just relax..."

This one is more bothersome (if you're the type to be bothered) because it's the basis for a story line that continues over several episodes.

Even the "divorce" angle is weak, because it raises more questions or problems for Mary than it solves.

They could've tried to explain it away as a fake. They used the "phony marriage to save a non-citizen from being deported" in another episode, so I guess that was off the table.

They could've said that she was a mysterious escapee from an insane asylum who Dick humored until her keepers could catch up with her, since Janet acted like such a nut even by 3rd Rock standards.

But for whatever reason, they just waved it off and had Mary somehow get over it.

When "the Wife" realized she didn't have to be married to Dick, she left. Dick told marry that his wife left him. He apologized for lying to Mary telling her something like his wife never understood him like Mary. If you know anything about Mary Albright, You know she has slept with everyone at the college.

I got the impression throughout the series that Mary was a very promiscuous woman before she met Dick. I wouldn't doubt it if she did date a married man before and would consider dating someone again after the man claimed they left their wife. I also think that while sweet at times, Dick and Mary's relationship with a bit dysfunctional so she would always take him back.

Well it did seem that she did make him work for it to get her back. I did rewatch the episode where she claims she never would date a married man. I also seen the one where she slept with the other alien while Dick was passed out. She must have a weakness for alien men.

It was resolved off camera, I guess. As far as forgiving him for "lying," they hashed that out pretty thoroughly. I mean she was pissed at him for a long time.
