3rd Rock from the Sun is Incredible

I remember having bits and pieces of this show before. Infact this was the first time I saw Wayne Knight and really noticed him (I had seen Jurassic park but I didn't really notice him then). I didn't know about his Newman character then.

Recently I discovered this show. I expected a cynical pretentious sitcom. For some reason, John lithgow always gave me that impression.

BUT

Goddamn, this has an emotional center. I never thought that a show having a 50 year old guy(and who looks older) can captivate me so much. Maybe it is because he is so childlike, so excitable, so much in love with Mary. It is so cute to watch, honestly. I know there are other characters in the series but I always love watching Dick's antics, his misunderstandings, his over the top gestures and so on.

I love the social commentary also, how they look at humans, their habits. Infact the behaviour of the aliens actually.....reminds me of myself and how I felt lonely and how I learnt slowly the habits and cultures of the new place. It is so clever. It can apply to any immigrant, any newcomer.

Till now my favourite episode is the one where he goes for Jury duty, LOL.

Sally character is pretty good too, it is fascinating to see how she adapts to being a human female and how she embarrasses herself in the process.

Damn the 90s were really a great time for sitcoms. 4 great sitcoms on TV at the same time(Seinfeld, 3rd rock, Friends, Frasier). Incredible.

I'm so glad this show is still attracting new fans. I personally think John Lothgow is one of he greatest comedy actors alive and this show, well, it's taught me so much about comedy and even more abou humanity. I can watch reruns every single day, it never gets tired. Seasons 5 and 6 show the characters much more adapted to human life and it seems then the show has run it's course but this show will go on as one of the most satisfying finales I've ever seen, funny but still emotional and conclusive. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

I bought all six seasons on DVD two years ago. And the show is classic comedy. But I have one complaint, Tommy's long hair in the first season. A young man with hair longer than most women. ----- Rusty

I loved it but I can see how younger audiences might crime at Tommy's look, which was in par with the 90s grunge look of river Phoenix, Kurt cobain and... Hang on, let me think of someone who actuall survived the 90s. Claire Danes?
Either way, the look of the Solomon's was very distinctive to show how much twy were fij out of water. Unlike other sitcoms, 3rd rock didn't try to have the characters follow trendy styles and be a 20 minute gap commercial like Friends was, but instead let each one develop its own style and stick with it, thus Tommy's hair, Harry's shirts and furry coat an Sally's butch wardrobe.

I love this show but I especially love Harry's fashion sense. He would have made a great partner for Phoebe Buffay.

Just watching season 1. This show is hilarious. John Lithgow is super talented in any role; but the Dick character is so funny. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was amazing even as a child actor; he really brings the Tommy character alive. Jane Curtain, French Stewart, Kristen Johnston and Simbi Khali are hysterical. Glad I found this show on Hulu.
