I was under the impression that medivac helicopters are unarmed (i.e. they don't have a guy with a machine gun hanging out the side firing away at the enemy)...correct me if I am wrong

shareThat's true, THEORETICLY that "Dustoff" helos are not useually armed, but as was learned in Vietnam some enemy soldiers do not recognize a medivac non-combat status and will still fire on them and the weapons on a "Dustoff" helo are for defense only
shareJust because someone's firing a machine gun out the door doesn't make them a gunship, however a 2.5" rocket pod and a side-mounted 7.62mm minigun does. Most nations we've encountered don't necessarily recognize the prevalent rules of war and routinely fire on them, so it's mostly an insurance policy.

My dad flew medivacs in Vietnam and the NVA and Viet Cong could give two s hits less if there was a red cross on the bird or not. To them, they were the enemy. I think the soldiers in Desert Storm were not going to hope that the Iraqis would do otherwise. C'mon- EVERYONE fights dirty in war!

Should have been immediate disqualification for any sort of award as this is not activity that is to be repeated by anybody and is certainly no role model. I think that one of the things that makes America great is that its supposed to follow the rules, regardless of whether the other side does or not, and still prevail. Therefore Americans breaking the rules is not to be tolerated in the least (those MPs in Iraq that tortured those men so cruelly and inhumanely should be spending the remainder of their lives in Ft. Leavonworth prison, no questions asked). In fact it is a soldiers sworn duty to NOT follow orders that they know are illegal.
