This movie is so much better if you go into it without...
knowing about the vampire plot or what it's about. Which is how I went into it years ago. I watched this movie, not knowing anything about the plot, and I thought I was watching a realistic gangster movie, and all the sudden, bam vampires. It takes you out of the movie for a second.
I tried this trick on my mom years ago. She's only into realistic thriller type movies, not into fantasy at all. She got really invested in the plot...and then bam, vampires, and she's like "what the hell...."
This movie does an awesome job and blending two tones of grounded realism and fantasy. It's like you're watching Godfather and all the sudden Micheal Corleone takes an an alien invader an hour in.
