I've seen two different versions of "Wide Sargasso Sea". It tells of how Rochester was tricked into marrying a woman who was already going mad and how this was kept from him until after the marriage. She does go completely mad after the marriage. He keeps his word and doesn't abandon her; takes her back to England and hires someone to take care of her. It's years later that he meets Jane Eyre.
It's a pretty good movie. The 1993 version is much, much better than the 2006 version.

The 1993 version is beautifully produced, and very sensual, overall.
Former model Karina Lombard is exquisite as the first Mrs. Rochester.
I liked it.

Thank you for mentioning Wide Sargasso Sea. Original version I remember being as excellent and poses the question "Is Mrs Rochester mad or an inconvenience?" Interesting plot twist.
