bad company?
when Jane's cousin died and she asked how, the reply was "he ruined his health because he kept bad company". does that mean he slept around and died of a venereal disease?

I thought it meant he had an entourage of people who gambled and drank and may have died a poor drunkard.
He did drink and gamble a lot, which lead to his ruin, and very nearly ruined Mrs. Reed as well. Eventually, he committed suicide.
