READ THE BOOK!!

NO matter if you have seen, want to see, or not you should READ THIS NOVEL!!! True I love reading as it is, but this book had me going through all human emotions and never wanting to put it down! I found myself waking up in the middle of the night just HAVING to read the book. WONDERFUL!! Truly a classic. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!

reply

I also love this book, and I can relate to what you mean. It is truly a great classic.

reply

~ I really love the novel. I read as crazy. And I think it's way better than the movie.

I thought this was an excellent representation, but clearly they didn't have enough time to fit the whole book in, and I must admit after watching it I went straight back to the book for that 'warm feeling'. This is an excellent representation, but believe me the book is so much better.

reply

I thought the film was ok but obviously no where near as good as the book...and I know they had to miss things out but Rivers didn't propose to her! that bit was like 5 minutes and completely insignificant.

Maybe they should do a Jane Eyre in parts for television... didn't the BBC do this before? Absolutely love the book (first classic I read, really got me into them) but I kept feeling they missed out parts. The time when she was young was too condensed, I think you need to see more of her cousins and of the school to really understand why Jane acts like she does.

reply

I agree. The BBC (was it?) did a 6 part thing for TV of Pride and Prejudice (mmm colin firth and wet shirt) that was really good. They could do that for Jane Eyre

The book is so sad at one part....I wanted to cry!!!

reply

I agree. The book is really good! (Though i unfortunately never got to finish it as it was one week late for the library return when i finally picked it up.) I thought it was just going to be one of those boring old novels that my tutor used to make me read but this one was excellent! and i haven't even got to the end! i know roughly what happens though because i saw the earliest film version of it on tv.
I did a history report on Charlotte Bronte and i actually found it really interesting. and it was a history project!
Anyways, good book.

reply

What part did you think was sad?

reply

they did: Jane Eyre in five parts, in 1983 :D

reply

i read this book once a year as i love it so much, i feel like i'm dying at the end, and i love the way it combines gothic horror with romance

That was the first adaptation I'd seen, even before i'd read the book - that was some 10 years ago - and it MADE me to read the book.
I love it and read it at least once a year since then.
I saw like 3 more adaptations, but 1983 is for sure my favorite - maybe because it was my first, or would it be the amazing Dalton? ;)

reply

They did make one. Check out the 1983 version with Timothy Dalton. It is not only faithful to the book, it is faithful to the spirit of the book. Track it down through Netflicks if you have to.

reply

This book is amazing!! I have never cried as hard as I did throughout this whole book. Gosh she represented true love like you rarely see it.

Yep - BBC came through with longer productions that cover much more of the book - the 1983 Timothy Dalton-Zelah Clarke already mentioned, and the best version of all (and truest to the novel), the 1973 5-part mini-series with Michael Jayston and Sorcha Cusack. Both are out on DVD now - yay.

reply

I'm 13 and I've read the novel! YAy for me! Anyway, it's one of my favorite books and I thought this verison on the book the best so far.

reply

That's so awesome, I'm 13 too, and I've read the novel! it was actually assigned for my class to read, and i honestly thought it wouldn't be anything special....and after I finished reading it I was so mad that I haven't heard of this book before!! And now I'm just so obssessed with it...can't wait to see the newest version BBC has made for it!

reply

I'm 14 and I read the book earlier this year - it was assigned to our class as well, and everyone absolutely hated it except for me... how can one do that? It's a classic, and it's amazing! Films very rarely do the books their full justice (the number of Austen-ites out there who scream at Keira Knightley!), but I think that this film was an *emotionally* accurate portrayal.
Although I would have liked to have seen the Rivers proposal, and all leading up to it. It's a rather crucial point in her coming back to Rochester, isn't it?

I often waver between this and Pride and Prejudice as being my favorite book. :)

reply

I like Pride and Prejudice too, because it is witty, clever and makes me laugh
every time, but it is definetely Jane Eyre for me. It's passion and the deeper
way of portaiting characters is unsurpassed. Let alone the poetic language
and the fact that Charlotte Bronte focuses more on the impediments society
puts versus people's desires, while Jane Austen is in favor of sustaining
the social tranquility at any cost.

I'm a 16-year-old male, and the novel is one of my favorites. I watched the 1971 version of the film. It had no huge mistakes, but overall it was flat. Heh, but at least it has John Williams doing the music. That was the best part of the adaptation. But the book truly excels.

I've only just started reading the book this week it seems to me that the 80's version with Timothy Dalton has stayed very true to the original story I also really enjoyed the latest BBC version too - but I thought it was about time that I actually read the book!

Oh, so you did... IroquoisPrincess21. Shall I...? Shall I read this book... hmmm... Such a tough decision! Tsk tsk tsk. I've read all of Jane Austen's books, so maybe I'll like Charlotte Bronte's. Oh my. Okay, I will. :-) I hope I'll come to share your feelings about this one.

I am so glad to have found someone who has read the book and loves it. Everyone I've talked to, who has read the book, has told me that they didn't like it, for reasons they aren't giving. I haven't read it, but I've seen way too many versions of it. If someone, could please tell me what they liked and disliked about the book, I would be very grateful. I want to see whether or not I really should read the book.

Don't hate. Appreciate.
