The Tans and the tenement

In one scene, a Black and Tan convoy passing an inner Dublin tenement block gets pelted with abuse and petrol bombs by the local residents.

Did such incidents as this happen in 1920s Dublin (or other Irish cities)? This sort of spontaneous action by civilians (as opposed to planned IRA actions) smacks more of Belfast or Derry in more recent decades than the War of Independence.

Perhaps, as with the car-bomb incident, Neil Jordan was seeking to draw parallels with the more recent conflict?
