The issue wasn't whether he was guilty of premeditated murder (he clearly was). Or that he was insane (he clearly wasn't).
The issue was that a white man (definitely at that time - perhaps even now) who did the exact same thing, for the exact same reason, would have gotten off.
And therefore, so should he.
