How were the memory scenes filmed?

Does anyone know any production details on the memory scenes in this film?

They appear to be filmed in 16mm because of their intense grain. It might even be 8mm film though.

Does anyone know about this? Maybe Paul Schrader has mentioned it in an interview somewhere? I'm just curious. To me, those scenes are the best part of this film. For Coburn's performance in them of course, but also for this avant-garde shooting style. To me, it really reflects the true quality of memories - The high grain of the images, the jump cuts, the slightly unsynced sound, the handhed, rapid camera movement. Great stuff.

I also am wondering about that myself. I also liked the way those scenes were filmed.

They were shot on 16mm, projected on to a screen and then the projection was photographed in 35mm.
