Was Jon Voight THAT bad?

This movie has become famous for Jon Voight bad acting which is hard to believe. I'm a huge Jon Voight fan by the way. I haven't seen this movie yet but how can he be THAT bad in the film.

reply

Well, he was "bad good". Whether he was being intentionally nutso or not, I do not know. But the performance he gave was hysterical, at any rate. You should check it out for yourself.

This was the funniest/worst movie I'd ever seen. Jon Voight was that bad. And Eric Stoltz unconcious for the whole movie! God, you must see this.

reply

"And Eric Stoltz unconcious for the whole movie!"

Lucky him, huh? I'm betting it was in his contract.

But don't forget the scene where he wakes up briefly, just in time to save the day at a key point before passing back out.

It really is a great movie, it just gets funnier over time.

Yeah.

I actually enjoyed Voigt's performance. He was really funny. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but he was funny.

The rest of the movie was so cheesy though. Where else can you see a snake eat someone, then spit him back out for no apparent reason? Also, I like it when there is a background description of anacondas in the beginning of the movie as if the facts were real.

Finally, I loved the hopelessly cheesy music.

I specifically looked up this movie just to see who would mention jon voight's brilliant unintentional 'overact' of the decade....you guys are dead on...it's so bad that it brings another dimension to the movie...think Penn in 'Casualties of War'...another great example...decent actor...but overacting nonetheless.

the simple answer to ur question is 'YES'...he was that bad, but i think it's unanimous that we all enjoyed it for some weird reason...come on...when Voight is starring at Lopez with his head tilted back thinking lascivious thoughts...i know u can't help but to laugh or show one of ur friends...its completely ridiculous.

anyways thanks for the thread.

IMO, Jon Voight is the perfect example that no matter how good of an actor you are, it sucks to be old. He did Superbabies of all things.

I thought snakes don't digest bones very well do they? And if that someone was a mammal, it was pretty accurate and no make-belief.

I personally feel this movie is a testament to Jon Voight's excellent acting ability. Only a true actor can take a script made of pure *beep* and stand there in front of the camera and work it as if it were gold. Everything about this movie was horrible in my opinion except his performance. He knew this part was crap, but he put as much into it as any of his roles. That's the mark of a professional as far as I'm concerned.

On another note, I just saw the sequel. Frighteningly enough it was actually a better movie than this (not that that's difficult to achieve; it was still pretty bad). But there were no standout performances like Voight's in this one.

reply

What is so mind-numbing is how Voight was singled out by critics—I'm talking mainly about Siskel and Ebert here—as being *great* in this film. They both gave the movie thumbs up, and I've choked on my rancor ever since. The movie was stupid from beginning to end, not scary, and not funny. Voight's performance just makes a bad film bizarre. But it could have worked. Look at *Holes*, a movie where Voight does something similar with his character and it works... but it's also in a much better film that is actually supposed to be funny.

reply

Wow myself I think Jon Voight did great with his character in this movie. Hes the main reason I think its a ok movie. Without him and how he played the character I would have probably hated the movie.

Jon Voigts performance as the Paraguayan should be recognised as one his most defining performances. This was a good film to begin with anyway, I dont care what people say. Voigts performance elevates the whole narrative. That combined with competent film-making provides the film with a very sinister and tense atmosphere. Better than this modern crap 2dy like The Grudge which is truly s***.

Classic Film with memorable performances. Otherwise people wouldn't still be talking about it.

Voigt's character/performance is what made the movie enjoyable IMO. He was the real villain and not the snake. He was so over the top, but it just worked.

He's so bad, he's good.

I think this is the only time I have agreed with Roger Ebert on anything if he said Vought was awesome in this movie. 100% correct. People who can't sit there and enjoy Vought's performance in this movie are people without brains or souls.

reply

I don't think it was bad acting - I think it was camp acting - he knew this movie was what it was - a "B" movie and he played his role for all its worth. Think of all the cheesy 50's and 60's sci-fi and horror movies and he perfectly played his role with tongue firmly in cheek. He was a true scene stealer and I think you need to watch it to appreciate it

reply

He was easily the best part of this movie (which I enjoyed!). He saw the movie for what it was, and didn't take himself too seriously. Scene stealer? I'd say movie stealer!

I think most people here are full of and so critical. Saying one of the best monster films is crap. What do you say about the real crap ones?
Anaconda is one of the rare higher grade creature features.
I agree Jon boy's performance is a standout, of any movie, because this is one of the very rare roles where an actor is being something other than himself, and acting, bringing more to it no one else could. Overacting? Such a character could exist, larger than life. He was a horror to behold. Makes Quint in Jaws look like a straight-faced fancy boy, but doesn't necessarily jump the shark, err snake.

Voight killed it in this and is really the only reason to see it. Pretty much every line out of his mouth as well as his little mannerisms are hilarious, and when me and my buddies are in need of a good laugh we start quoting Sarone.

Did you ever see The Princess Bride? Well Jon Voight went to the same language school as Mandy Patankin. He sounded exactly like him. I half expected him to say "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die".

Lame movie, stupid special effects.

I think that Jon Voight was having the time of his life making that movie, just having a ball. It is not in anyway "bad acting", he's just acting over-the-top like so many actors in B-movies from the 50's, he plays with the cliché of the usual villains and takes those clichés to another dimension. I think he's hilarious in Anaconda!

reply

Did Jon Voight get a Razzie for that?
Edit: nominated for Anaconda, not won (1998) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118615/awards
Apparantly, 1998/1997 was a good year for him with nominations for Most Wanted (1997) and U Turn (1997) also. http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Awards/Razzie_Awards/1998

I loved the way he portrayed that character. He was a little bit crazy after all. His despising expressions were great: a man so full of himself.

But i would have kicked his @ss much earlier in the movie..!

reply

Voight's performance is the only reason to watch this crappy movie. I think he knew that the movie sucked, but he took it with humour and had some very funny scenes.

reply

I don't see any mention of Superbabies. If you think this is bad (and it is) he sunk even lower for Superbabies in 2004 - again with a terrible foreign accent. Compared to Deliverance and Urban Cowboy, it's what I'd call really hitting bottom - but I guess he needed to do what he needed to do.

reply

I think it was the "I'm evil" sneer he wore for every shot of the entire movie that kicked it to another level.

Guy hops on your boat in a rain storm and comes up with an "I'm evil" sneer before he delivers his first line, just throw him back overboard.

He plays a bad guy who is soooooo bad that he scowls during the entire movie. I can't figure out if he was just trying to be over the top big time or he thought that he had to change his look to be mean and nasty.
