here's a different opinion

wow, i really didnt expect this movie to catch as much flak as it does...
now i usually have pretty good taste in movies, im not saying im roger ebert, but i know a stinker when i see it. with that said i dont see what the huge beef with this movie is. i thought the visuals were great at the time, when you watch the original and then this one, you definently see we've come pretty far in animation. the soundtrack is great, and "missing time" by mdfmk is still among my favorite songs. the only negative i see in the soundtrack is that the ICP song dirtball is a bit out of place but its not like the song blows the whole soundtrack out of whack. i guess i can see how a totally hardcore metal fan might have problems with its industrial feel, but cmon, this is still great quality stuff. i think my favorite aspect of the movie, other than the soundtrack, is the villain. michael ironside's tyler is still one of my favorite villains in any movie, but yet i cant exaclty put my finger on why that is. i think its because he's simple, straight to the point, *beep* all the reasoning crazy. he has a great egotistical arrogance to him, and just barbaric enough to make him feel at home in the heavy metal universe. but again, i dont know exactly why i like the character so much, i guess theres just something about him (and lets face it, ironside always plays a great villain).
with the good things out of the way i have to be fair and address some of the downsides to this film. the plot is weak, and never feels involving enough for you to really care about the characters. i agree with alot of the other posters when it comes to the fact that the movie should have been broken up into seperate stories, that way it would feel more like the magazine and not an underacheiving feature film. the dialog for most characters left me disapointed, nothing the characters say is espeially brillaint (althought i still get a kick out of tylers "what does it take to get laid around here?!")
is this a great movie? no. does it surpass the original? nope. is it a god awful peice of *beep* undeserving of the heavy metal name? again, no.
i personally classify it as 'good', not great. i sincerely hope that they produce another sequel, and hopefully they will include more of what made the original great, i suspect this one was too much a departure for the fans to swallow. but its going to be hard to replicate john candy and eugene levy sniffing coke off a spaceship floor.

i just remembered that john candy wasnt with eugene in the coke sniffing, sorry for the innacuracy.
