I believe the point was that he was giving Gere an out, "oh, no coffee for you, so you won't have to come with me, so you just stay here while I run in ..." etc.

no it isn't or not really....... Arthur Guinness was Irish born county Kildare, Guinness has always been brewed in Ireland,
but
although born in Ireland, A.G's family were Irish unionist and he was opposed to Irish independence..

porter beer was first brewed in London England, but that does not make Guinness the same, just as Guinness is different to other porters/stouts brewed in other parts of Ireland...
like a good wine, its all about technique, fermenting process, barrel age etc....

by the same logic England have won every world cup, well football/soccer was invented in England :-D
