I'll be honest, I was rooting for the Jackal

Spoilers:

Willis was just so cool! And to be perfectly truthful, I woulda really like to see him beat the snot out of Gere at the end...not that I don't like Gere, but I'm just a little sick of these "Seemingly minor character ends up paying off in the end by arriving at the last moment to kill bad guy" endings.

But then again, I kinda have a thing for bad guys. I was rooting for Tyler Durden in Fight Club :)

I may be dumb, but at least I ain't a cripple. Oh...damn.

NOooo i hated his character, just remember how he kills the gay cold-bloodedly,
he was a assassin how could anyone love him?? and somebody said its a cliched ending what other ending he'd expected, gere's character get killed or the assassin gets away?? maybe the latter would be the best ending and then showing us he went back to some glamorous countries and planning a another high profile assassination of some head of the state.
that would've been cool ending!

i was rooting for him too, sure he a heartless bastard and all, but he character was so cool, i would of liked to see the jackal win to be honest. i loved that bit where he goes crazy in the subway.

I am glad to find a board where truth is spoken so freely. I too was drawn to rooting for The Jackal. To effortlessly take care of annoying people as he took care of Jack Black. Without the horrible guilt trip for the rest of my life fearing death and judgement at every turn like some basket case that I am in fact in real life.

Maybe this is too much sudden frankness?

But yes. I too wanted the The Jackal to win. He got as far as he did and damm it. Finish what you started!

I liked the Internet cafe transfer of messages. I like the big giant gun with the depleted Uranium. I liked the agent on the car door. I liked the boat across the chilly waters looking into the distance like Garbo in Queen Christina. I liked the whole thing and I thought Elbert was nuts to give this movie a low rating. He had an off day in my op.

SPOILERS

And man. I wish he had killed Gere even if he had to die as the bad guy in the end. That was a let down for sure.

Me too. He should have messed Richard Gere up. He's a great villian. Think about it. No one roots for Darth Vader because he has a massive army on his side and enough power to annihilate a planet. They root for him because of that awesome bad guy image. The Jackal took it further. He had the image but he didn't have an army. He didn't have countless minions. He was a loner who nearly takes on the entire US police force and military to get his target. He's just that good.

Gere should've showed up at the subway, totally unexpected to find the Jakal waiting for him, aiming his gun at him. Gere then should've been shot in the stomach. As he looks down, he is amazed to find that he's not bleeding, but leaking jet fuel! As he looks back up, he's the Jakal light a chrome Zippo and say, "yippee ki yay, motherf ucker."

LMAO! Hllarious! It would've been the perfect ending!!!

Spoilers Ahead:

I would have loved for The Jackal to have been successful if his target had been the FBI Director. But the First Lady...no.

I rooted for him when he killed everyone except for the Russian KGB agent, Valentina. I have a thing against most women characters being murdered/killed. This is the main reason I can't stand the movie, "Cliffhanger." That first scene...horrible.

I rooted for The Jackal (partially because I have a thing for Bruce Willis) when he killed the FBI agents (especially Witherspoon the "by the book" butthole), the hi-jacker, the security guard at the subway, Lamont the mercenary ("Run"). However, the best murder was killing the gay man. The Jackal took care of business, and went back to his dinner.

I disliked it when The Jackal grabbed the innocent girl to use as a hostage. However, I still wished he had killed Richard Gere's character, and then escaped with his $35 million.

And as another discussion: I read on Wikipedia that The Jackal "pretended to be gay" in order to get the parking pass and to have a place to stay. I don't think he "pretended" but was actually gay. A great scene would have been The Jackal sleeping with the guy, then killing him later during the newscast.

Don't you DARE faint Pittypat Hamilton! If Melanie says it's alright, it tis alright!

Gere should have been the one to go help the first lady knocking her off the podium and taken the bullets for her. Seeing him getting shredded by THE CANNON would have made this my top film. No way you are telling me he can handle that modern rifle better than the sharpshooter he took it off. And his line about removing the laser sight was classic. Lets get back to the old school sniping without these modern contraptions in the way.
Why would the FBI sharpshooter be using a laser sight? At the range he was shooting his rounds would have landed about 6 feet from the dot

oh yeah i agree with ya there, i hate it when the good guy always wins,, bout time the bad guy wins,, if you like those endingss,, check out Arlington Road,, with Jeff Bridges
works for me

I'd go so far as to say the reason this film got lukewarm ratings was because Gere wasn't killed off.

reply

I'd have to agree with you guys, I was rooting fot Bruce the whole time. It's hard NOT to root for Bruce in any movie. One little moment I loved was when he was walking through the subway and cooly popped the security guard. Immediatley the subway turns into crowd chaos.

I also was disappointed Gere didn't get killed off. At least Bruce got him in the shoulder. And he wasn't even looking!

Lady, I never walk into a place I don't know how to walk out of.
