Yeah I dunno, it's weird. I used to think it was because he was just accidentally witness to the alien landings and so had to join the agency otherwise he'd blab. But then he'd just be like all those other humans that end up on the "Hotsheets" whom no one would believe.
Guess it just adds a bit of mystery to a cool badass character.

Because K handled the situation not with fear but with awe and respect, he was recruited by choice. Sometimes people have to sacrifice things they love to do something great. This was his great thing.
