Plot similar to The Relic.

So I am trying to think of this movie, but I am not sure what it is called. I thought it might be the relic, but it isn't. Can anyone help me?

Way back in the early 90's my dad and I saw a monster movie, and I have been trying to find the name of it.

Basically at the start of the movie, they find a stone covered in unknown writing at this archaeological dig. this real jerk of a guy, cuts his finger on it, and as a result turns into a hairy beast that starts killing people. This old man, possibly the grandfather, knows what is going on, due to a legend passed on by his people. He is dying possible due to an attack caused by the beast, when he gets a young man, possibly his grandson to believe him. He tells the grandson of an ax, hidden in a church, behind a painting of St George and the dragon. the young man takes the ax, and he and I think a cop, go to kill the beast. At the end of the movie, during the big fight scene. one of the two,, needs the axe, so they pass the axe, right through the beast. I know the movie title begins with the word "the" I believe the next word starts with R. and it is a two word title.
