Best Black Film of 1997?

Do you agree with that statement? For my money, EVE'S BAYOU was a vastly superior film, but black people didn't support it nearly as much. Although it was the highest grossing independent film of that year, a large percentage of its support didn't come from black people.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, I guess so. What was a good Yellow, Red, White or Brown movie of 1997?

or are you living in the 60's and meant racial black?

EVA'S BAYOU was a superior film, but was not a "box office friendly" film.

That seems to happen often with Afro-American Films. And I feel the reason

for that goes far beyond the "Soul Food" message board. However, it could be

that Hollywood has forced fed us so many negative Afro-American films.

That maybe we subconsciously gravitate towards the negative films.

^^^Hmmm...what was negative about Soul Food?

Are you joking? Hoodlum? That movie was historically inaccurate up the ass. I was surprised they didn't bump off Lucky Luciano while they were at it!

Louis you are absolutely right. Though we may give a lot of lip service about wanting more positive images in film we don't support it. I haven't done an analysis f 1997 yet based on box office #'s but look at the year 1991:

New Jack City budget was 8 million it made 46 million

Boyz in the Hood budget was 7 million it made 56 million

Five Heartbeats budget was 7 million it made 8 million

Most black folks rave about 5 Heartbeats but obviously we didn't see it at the theatre when it counted.

I thought it was quite refreshing to see intelligent Blacks up on screen who weren't uppity. I'm so tired of seeing Blaxploitation films.

reply

Yeah it is one of the best black films but one of the worlds sadist movie when Big mamma dies, it reminded me my god grandmother who died in 1987

reply

ok so Men in Black
has black in it
and Will Smith is one of the main characters
but it isn't a Black movie

"Malcolm X" is the only black film from the 90's better than "Eve's Bayou."

That's why it was a shame that the NAACP gave Soul Food Outstanding Motion Picture of 1997 over "Eve's Bayou." They're not even in the same level of film craftsmanship. That's like the Academy giving "Bound by Honor (1993)" Best Picture over "Schindler's List (1993)."
