I hate that stupid reverend

So irritating! Greedy too telling the kids not to take that much. *beep* *beep*

reply

Hahaha just goes to show how good the food was lol

reply

Must be! I would have shoved the catfish down his greedy ass throat and yell "EAT UP BITCH! Heres your soul food *beep* EAT UP BITCH!"

reply

I know it was meant to be humorous, but you only get to eat like that in front of me ONCE. Try it a second time and I'm wrapping your plate in some foil and telling you, "Nice to see you again. Goodbye!" Pigs at a trough had more table etiquette than that preacher did.

"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"

This character is an offensive stereotype that's been around for too many years to count, in movies and books. Not only is he a glutton mumbling incoherently in the few moments he's not shoveling food in his mouth and smacking his lips--he's a lecher. Why hasn't anybody in the film or in this string objected to he way he gropes and fondles nearly every woman in reach? And I can't imagine him providing good pastoral care. Shouldn't he have been at the hospital at least once to comfort Mama Joe before surgery, or later to help the family deal with her coma and death? Steppin Fetchit might as well have been lounging around the house, too.

reply

He was slightly annoying, but not totally unrealistic. Most black families probably know a boisterous, unfiltered and silly old guy like him from the Steppin Fetchit era who is friends with one of your grandparents. He was basically the last of his kind. The next generation won't know that kind of persona, but in Soul Food he wasn't untrue.
