I think calling it a black movie doesn't do it justice. Sure, it's main characters are black, but I'm white, and it always resonated with me (luckily, I saw it uncut for the first time tonight). These could have been white characters and the only thing that would have changed would have been the reference to white folk and black oppression (that was what? like 15 seconds?).

Honestly, skiop when I look in a blockbuster or some place that has a lot of movies--they tend to separate movies with mostly a Black cast as 'Black Movies' and face it, if this cast was white, I have no doubt that htey would have been nominated and won a few Golden Globes (which I think also applies to movies) or Academy Awards, but I think that the Academy members aren't too keen on black movies. Also, some things in Soul Food would not have worked if hte characters were white--not a prejudicial statement but a factual one

Some that deserves to be in the Top Ten are

Cover (2005 Thriller)
What's Love Got To Do With It

No offense but there hasn't been an Oscar worthy black movie in years so of course there won't be any Oscar nominations.

we are supposed to like black movies becuase they are about black people. if the same movie was made with white folks it would have been a lifetime straight to tv movie. black people make a crappy movie and we are supposed to stand and cheer. i am really tired of this racism against white people in america.

Actually it's the opposite.

Someone's ignorant.
This movie was very well acted. And touches on a lot of subjects that are important for all families, but especially Black families.

& you're not "supposed" to like any movies, you like a movie if you can connect to it and identify with the characters and the situations.

"Do you even remember what you came here to find?"
