Yeah "The Last Days of Disco" starring Chloë Sevigny & Kate Beckinsale. It was released the same year as "54" & is set in the nightclubs of Manhattan in the very early 80's. So very similar.

It also contains the original recording of "Knock on Wood" by Amii Stewart, as opposed to Mary Griffin performing as Amii in "54". Why do I care? My father produced that track.

Jamieleng, do you have any idea why Amii's original recording was not used in the film and on the soundtrack? All of the other tracks, other than the theme song - If You Could Read My Mind (original disco version performed by Viola Wills), were the versions from the original artists.

I figured it might be because the director wanted Knock on Wood performed live in the film, and Amii was a little too old for the part (and the costume---which was identical to the one on Amii's original album cover).

I believe, if my memory serves me correctly, that she was asked to appear in the film but declined.

She has lived a relatively quiet life in Italy for many years now, only occasionaly appearing on Italian TV. Below is a video of her performing a duet with Jose Feliciano on an Italian TV show in 2002 (4 years after this film). She looks absolutely fantastic & has hardly aged at all.

24 Hour Party People, yes, story is almost the same true events-stuff, but music and film itself is much better

Liquid Sky, from 1982, weird one

reply

Isn't Party People the one Mccully Culkin in? Much better. A real hoot.

reply

You're thinking of 'Party Monster'

'24 Hour Party People' is about the Manchester music scene.

Some crazy stuff took place in and around clubs in Ibiza, involving celebrities and sex and drugs. I don't know if any movie has attempted to capture that. The only Ibiza movies I can think of are "Kevin And Perry Go Large" and "It's All Gone Pete Tong"; neither are very good.

"Human Traffic" may be the best ever film about clubbers. "Weekender" is about the early days of raves in Britain, and "Club Le Monde" is, um, not sure really what that was about, but it takes place around a seedy local dance club. "Groove" and "Go" involve the US rave scene.

"Times Square" was made around 1980, and like "54" the released version was drastically altered from what the director intended. The two runaway teen girls were more than just good friends in the original version, but only glimpses of that remain. Excellent soundtrack. "The Fantastic Stains" is a similar punk-rock girl power movie from that era; it's out on DVD.

Saturday Night Fever (1977)

I know, it may sound silly but "Thank God it's Friday" is a good disco era club type movie. I love the soundtrack!

reply

TGIF is a disco "comedy" -- not a disco ''drama'' like Saturday Night Fever or Boogie Nights

I HATE DONALD J TRUMP AND JILL FARREN PHELPS -- TOGETHER THEY BOTH STINK

reply

It reminded me of "Boogie Nights".

Looking for Mr. Goodbar. Not on Blu-ray or DVD but I'm sure you can find it online.

Be warned, though, it's very grim but the soundtrack is amazing.
