I've lost count on how many this movie is repeated over here in the UK but I watch it nearly every single time when I can. It's just faultlessly entertaining. Rachel Weiz is adorable, Brendan fraiser is super charismatic, Benny and Jonathan are hilarious, Aderth bay is cool, fun plot, colourful setting, there's too many great elements I just never get bored at any moment the pace is excellent.
The only movies that rivals it's rewatchabilty for me is Rush Hour 2 and the Mummy Returns ( I love it as well, don't see a big difference between the two's quality)
Well, what else can I say that wasn't already said? By far the most rewatchable movie for me, tied with only Dumb & Dumber. It's so much fun it's ridiculous, it excels in providing entertainment for all ages. I agree with whoever said it's more fun than Indiana Jones movies, not even The Last Crusade is as fun as this.
The Mummy provides a good mix of action, adventure, horror, mystery, comedy, romance, documentary/History etc. Has a simple but effective plot, good pacing, very likable characters and a formidable villain. Visual effects might not be the best, but they're good enough and do not detract from the film at all.
I was lucky to first watch this gem a few months before the sequel arrived in theatres, when I were only 11, so you can bet I was very excited. I really miss those times, summer blockbusters are not the same anymore.
It's one of my favorite movies of all time, and probably my second favorite adventure movie of all time, behind The Last Crusade. Raiders is a very close third. National Treasure #4.
I've watched The Mummy many times and have owned it on VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray and now 4K Blu-Ray. It's one of those films that I will buy every time it comes out on a new format (though sadly, 4K Blu-Ray will quite possibly be the last of the physical formats). It's also one of just a handful of movies that I've also listened to the director's commentary for.
The film is a masterpiece of its genre. It's perfectly cast and extremely well-executed on every level. It is in every way FUN and ENGAGING, a landmark example of escapist entertainment.
It's a shame that the sequels were not nearly as good as the first film. It's also a shame that no one since 1999 has made an adventure film that comes even close to it. Even Stephen Sommers himself has struggled mightily to reach the same heights that he did when he made The Mummy.
I watched the movie probably more than ten times, so it's definitely rewatchable.
When you consider how few good adventure films have been produced in the last twenty years, you realize how great the film's achievement is.
