Anyone know what the Mcternien Version was like?

I like the 13th Warrior but there are parts where it's clear that a lot of stuff was cut or reshot, especially Bandera's romance with the woman which seems to come out of nowhere and disappear just as suddenly.

I wonder what the original cut of the movie was like?

reply

I wonder the same thing. I really don't understand why studios let "test audiences" influence a piece of cinema. It almost always results in a watered down POS. I guess that's what happens when money dictates art.

reply

I don't understand Test audiences either, most often from what I've read the test audiences are half the time made of people would never go see the movie anyway.

Mcternien's version was much more action based and darker in tone. So they added more exposition.

It would be great if they released a Director's Cut. This is one of my top favorite films, I never get tired of it, it would be interesting to see a different vision for it.

Global Warming, it's a personal decision innit? - Nigel Tufnel

That really would be great. I've always been a little surprised the movie wasn't more popular. A re-release director's cut (if it's actually good) might stir up some more attention to the film.

I think one of the big issues was it was limited release. I only saw it in theater cause we had just walked by and I was like, "WHAT THIS MOVIE." Me being a big fan of any warrior type movie told the wife into watching it out of the spur of the moment since she made me take a trip ot the mail with her. Get in there and BANG.....I READ THIS BOOK. Not to mention the teaser trailer was titled "Eaters of the Dead." So I was waiting for a movie with that title to come out and not the one it ended up coming out as. I would love to see the directors cut.

Yeah, I really didn't know about the movie prior to stumbling upon in on UK TV. I have since learned about the conflicts during the films production which explains some of the films weaknesses. I have the DVD of the film but would film but I would certainly buy another with the McTiernan version copies of which I assume must be lying around somewhere. Don't expect it though.

I also have to agree. This movie was phenomenal! Many things to like about this movie:

-Banderas wasn't the leader in the film but had a lot of redeeming qualities and it was nice to see him as an imperfect warrior.
-How the bear men used folklore and trickery to put fear into the hearts of the villagers. I liked how they took their dead with them to make it seem as if they were immortal
-The fire serpent tactic.
-The other actors (especially Banderas friend) although not well known held their own on the big screen.
-Dialogue was well written (bantering between them well timed)

"An engineering dispute"

This movie definitely deserves a better rating on IMDB

How was he imperfect? Reluctant, yes, but he did everything the other 12 did and even rode out to save the child!

I think they meant they guy who played Herger, the smaller blond northman with the beard who along with buliwyf is the one who is most friendly to in fadlan

McTiernan states towards the end of these extensive cast/crew video interviews "....the directors cut is different in several ways but I can't claim there was a magnificent movie.....difference of maybe 5, 10 minutes....maybe it's better leaving it as a myth."

This is far from an amazing movie but I really enjoy it regardless. I think it would have less charm if it was more serious and grim dark. This flick definitely has the fingerprints of studio meddling, but I think it needed it.
