Because maybe they aren't the judges of quality that they present themselves and everyone else perceives them to be?

Cause the oscars aren't really about whats best. Its political. Was Spotlight the best film of last year? Was Sandra bullock really better than that chick from precious? No. Should shawshank redemption have gotten an oscar - definitely - did it win anything? No.
Stanley Kubrick never even got an oscar except for visual effects for 2001 - and he's generally considered the greatest film maker ever.
Don't get me wrong sometimes the academy gets it right - but mostly they get it wrong.
Today it would be disqualified because the cast is entirely white, but back in 99? The same reason Kubrick films never win major awards… their greatness only becomes apparent years later.
