I hate that scene where Robbie sings drunk

I loved this film, but one scene really bugged me.

He basically ruined that couple's wedding, just because he was jilted.
Then when the father gets mad, Robbie gets mad at HIM!

I would have charged the stage & beaten the crap out of that dopey loser for doing that to my daughter.

He wasn't drunk you moron, he wasn't in the mood.

Um, yes he was.
But even if I am mistaken, there's no need to be rude!

Of course he was being a jerk. That's the whole point and it's why the father of the bride punched him out. I thought it was a hilarious scene.

I thought it was a bit out of character for Robbie. The entire movie he comes across as a genuinely nice guy, except for that part. Yes, he was devastated, but he was just downright mean in that scene. In all the other scenes, he was simply down on himself, making self-deprecating jokes, or just depressed.

Didn't take away from the movie though, as it was a pretty funny scene, especially with the jokes about the "losers at table 9".

reply

I personally love that scene. I hate "couples" too! hahahaha...

reply

I don't think he was drunk, just very depressed.

reply

He wasn't drunk; he said several times in the movie he wasn't a big drinker, which is why the scene when Linda comes back makes sense; he wasn't thinking clearly. At the wedding, he was just severely depressed & didn't care what he did or said.

And to this day, I can't hear the Madonna version of that song without thinking of Adam Sandler cry-singing Holiday. I actually prefer the movie version. Too funny.

Into the mud, scum queen!
Who are you talking to?
Oh, just some scum queen.

He was definitely drunk, and his brother's suggestion that he go back to work turned out to be the worst possible thing he could have done. He just wasn't ready yet or in the right state of mind. I hate the scene too, but it is very necessary.

Well, he didn't "charge the stage" but he did beat the crap out of Robbie, or at least get a few good punches in during his "Love Stinks" song.

"Cindy and Scott are newlyweds! Whoopee-dee-doo!" It was hilarious!

"Are you suggesting that coconuts migrate?"

reply

Robbie had just had his heart broken because he really loved Linda and also really wanted to be married. Playing at a wedding and being surrounded by happy people celebrating reminded him of what he lost out on. It was more than he could take. That's why he was reluctant to sing at Julia's wedding and instead focus on Bar mitzvahs.

reply

Fine, he can be depressed and wah-wah-wah....but he is not only at work & agreed to do a job....but he all but RUINED someone's wedding!

I know this is fiction, but I've seen people like that ruin someone's party by getting drunk & belligerent etc.
Disgusting thing to do!
