Kevin Costner as Qui-Gon Jinn???

One of my biggest reservations with Phantom Menace is this; Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are too much alike character wise... They're both very "by the book". I think Qui-Gon Jinn's character would have been much stronger if he was more of a cowboy, his ways often questioned by his "by the book apprentice" Obi-Wan. I think that would have created a stronger dynamic between the two Jedi. If Kevin Costner played Qui-Gon Jinn as more of a cowboy, it could have created that dynamic. When Qui-Gon Jinn eventually dies fighting Darth Maul, it's very forgettable. It's too easy on the viewer's emotions. If Qui-Gon Jinn died courageously fighting Darth Maul as "the last of the cowboys" it would have cemented his character better as a "Jedi Legend".

A master and his apprentice are similar...wow what a goof!

it was a bit underplayed, but Qui-Gon is like a hippy, who follows his own path and doesn't 'dig' authority.
Obi-Wan is more by-the-book, follow-the-rules kind of guy. Qui-Gon is always telling him to open his mind to the 'living Force'.
I'd imagine Costner's performance would have been like his Waterworld role (zzzzzzzzzzz)

Costner in 1999 had very little credibility

I think Neeson and McGregor’s similarities played up on the apprentice/master relationship
