Too bad I was an adult when it came out, I suppose. Because it's a crap grownup film.

I think it's because Jar Jar steps in that pile of shit. That's what elevates this one from just being a piece of garbage to a great kids film.

I remember back in '77 that was the huge criticism of the original (oh yeah, it wasn't universally loved back then despite what you might think) - just not enough in it for kids. I remember several people saying "Yeah it was ok but I was really disappointed Luke didn't step in a big pile of shit. That would really have made it for me".

Yes It was deliberately the lightest and family/kid friendly of the PT films. The films really had no choice but to get darker from there. It was the right call and I enjoyed it, even if I would have tweaked a few things in retrospect.
