Phil Tippet says "a lot of the CGI shots don't look good"

Prequel kiddies don't know or care who Phil Tippet is because he worked on the best SW movies. Since 1999 I assumed the real SW crew wouldn't like the prequels and on Vice tv "Icons Unearthed" I was finally proven right.

unlike ANH no one questioned George, no one said No. he faced no adversity and didn't need to really problem solve or innovate. he was surrounded by yes men and everyone assumed it'd be great

here he is basically admitting TPM ending is a total tonal mess.

reply

It may not have been a tonal mess if George would have brought back past Oscar winning editors Paul Hirsch, or Richard Chew. Instead he let sound man Ben Burtt edit the prequels.

reply

a longer video expands on George pointing out the issues. its not just editing, its the story at the end.

"you almost cant take any piece out, because it brings you to the next place"

hes talking about In the end how you have like 4 or 5 different tones all going on at once. I mean this is one major issue, but the story throughout is junk. also theres no clear protagonist. also the characters are boring and bland

reply

The CGI got worse in the next two. Episode 2 has some historically bad scenes that could be the worst ever.

reply

Meh, it's mostly fine.

Like with the OT, Lucas was literally inventing and innovating filmmaking methods to make his movies in the PT.

reply

The problem with the prequels was Lucas thinking he needed to invent and innovate new methods. This caused the prequels to look completely different than the look of the original trilogy that is universally loved. And no the prequels are not mostly fine.

reply

He literally changed the industry both times. MoCap and CGI wouldn't be where they are today without Lucas.

reply

Yeah, I know Lucas' XBox game looking CGI abuse lead to copycats. THAT'S the problem. It's become a crutch for lazy hack directors, prequel kiddie.

reply

I present to you "She-Hulk." Nothing more needs to be said as to who has the poorer-quality CGI.

reply

I hate prequel. but have to admit, CGI is very good in Phantom menace. podrace, underwater city & monster, lightsabre fight room - look amaze. look real in fact. i would say this film with T2 and starship troops have best CGI i've seen.

Problem with prequel is babyish & cartoonish tone. film feel like it for kid who very young. does not feel like star wars. all the great action and special effect cannot save babyish tone. original trilogys have more mature tone, more realistic, more grit.
