He was a Jedi Master who died right around the time Qui-Gon Jin did. Dooku placed the order for the clone army in his name and he either killed him or he just assumed his identity after he died.

The "real" answer is that it was originally written as "Sido-dius" and as a "mispronunciation" of his name, it was meant to imply that ( Darth ) Sidious was the one who ordered the Clone Army.

Ultimately, George felt that it was "too obvious" of a clue for the audience, and he changed it.
