Do people here feel sorry for Wally Worthington?

He treated Homer as his friend, took him in.
He's a war hero.
He seems to be a nice guy.
But yet his girlfriend ( or wife ) cheated on him AND he became paraplegic at the end.

reply

yes of course , but Wally went back on his own , Homer was not trying to betray him but they were close and things happen especially with a young boy and a woman that is lonely and admittedly weak .
They are no absolute hero in this movie , that is why I love it .

Well in the book Homer and Candy didn't have sex until after Wally's plane went down, all of his other crew members were found and he was presumed dead or captured by the Japanese. Obviously a lot had to be taken out due to time constraints, but in the book Candy was not so weak, seemed to care for Homer more, but felt obligated to marry Wally because of his accident.
I disagree with there not being any heroes in this movie, because I see three. Wally is the visible hero because he all decorated and has a war time injury in which he signed up for and wasn't drafted. Larch and especially Homer are the less obvious heroes and I'll focus on Homer as he was the main character. Homer believed abortions should be legalized, but also believes the fetus has a soul and wants no part in the abortion business. By the end of the movie Homer has gone against this fundamental belief in order to dedicate his entire life to the greater good, if that's not a hero I don't know what is! If you meant that nobody in the movie is flawless, then I would have to agree with you.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man. - The Dude

No I don't. He volunteered for the most dangerous run there was. Did he consider how much it would destroy Candy if he died? He was obviously an adrenaline junky, and that's all he cared about, getting his fix and his glory. Also being paralyzed from the waist down means he will never be able to have sex again, so Candy will never be able to have sex again either. He put an undue burden on her, so I don't feel bad she got it on with Homer. Basically Wally was an idiot. We all saw how Candy looked naked, he must have be crazy to think nobody was going to tap that while he was gone. It's like leaving a stack of money in the middle of a sidewalk, someone is going to pick it up.

He was fighting for his country so I feel so for him as he gave it all for a cause how can you not feel sorry for a man whom is now paralyzed for life because he was brave.

Many men go to war and come back disabled would you say they should have thought of there wives back home and no one do the dangerous missions. If this were true no one would even fight.

He went to war and volunteered for your freedom. And he trusted his wife to be faithful as all men do. He was to me a honorable brave man as he trusted his wife to wait for him as she did. Even though she is a woman who will have to look else where for sex if she desires it. I believe in the end she will stay the course with him and i would not be surprised if he encourages her to find sex elsewhere. something many veterans do whom are disabled.

He never said anything about "fighting for freedums", it was all about the thrill, that was made clear during their discussion on the beach. Like when he went for the ride with Homer through the orchard, flying around at top speed taking huge risks. He was obviously an adrenaline junky, so sooner or later his lifestyle would catch up with him and he'd be seriously injured or killed. He made his bed. Especially since he was the one who threw her together with Homer. "Why don't you two young good looking people in your sexual prime hang out together for a few years while I completely vanish". If he didn't expect her to cheat, then he's borderline retarded.

So he was adrenaline junkie, most pilots are, he was a thrill seeker. But those desires dose not mean he did not enjoy fighting for freedom. To a lot of soldiers that is a high in itself. You may need to watch the film again. Or you have a hard time understanding what some soldiers are like. Wars need men like him that don't worry about getting hurt, only to return as a hero. Most wives just hope for the best. Most wives know what type of men the are. No one is saying he was wise or smart, it does not mean he should be looked down upon for loosing his legs no matter what he was seeking.

All I'm saying is, an accident like that would have befallen him eventually whether there was a war on or not. If he hadn't had the flying, probably he would have been killed or maimed in a car crash. He volunteered for the most dangerous run because he was a thrill seeker. His wife should not have to suffer the consequences of his poor decisions, that was all on him. If she decided to stay with him, then yes she must suffer the consequences. But she had every right to not stay with him and go with Homer instead. Homer was stable and far more responsible. Also she was obviously a very sexual woman, considering she was getting freaky with Homer in the cider house and getting abortions in an era like that. He obviously knew that about her, so leaving her alone with Homer for years was simply begging for trouble.

He set all the dominoes up himself, risking his life thrill seeking, and risking his wife by dropping her together with Homer. He liked Homer, so perhaps he specifically arranged for her to be together with him since Homer was a nice guy and could "fill in" for him while he was away. Satisfy the wife's big sexual needs while he was away so she wouldn't end up hooking up with someone sleazy. Homer was a guy he felt comfortable sharing his wife with.
