Can I ask you how a film that garnered 7 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Director, and walked away with 2 of them, is underrated?

reply

It is rarely put on tv (in the UK anyway), it is never talked about and never praised. Yes it won oscars though that doesn't mean it can be underrated.

I like Tobey Maquire, but I think he was just miscast -- or maybe Theron was.

1996-1999 was a great time for talented young actors / actresses, and though "some" might have gone onto bigger roles/movies, I would say none of them matched the quality (and youthful exuberance) of their 1990's performances. Some on this list, were never again that great, or at least the movies were under whelming.

Tobby Maguire - The Cider House Rules
Jude Law - The Talented Mr Ripley
Matt Damon - The Talented Mr Ripley
Matt Damon - Good Will Hunting
Ben Affleck - Chasing Amy
Hillary Swank - Boys Don't Cry
Angelina Jolie - Girl Interrupted
Ed Norton - American History X
Ed Norton - Fight Club
Brad Pitt - Fight Club
Reese Witherspoon - Election
Reese Witherspoon - Freeway
Joaquin Phoenix - Inventing the Abbotts
Joaquin Phoenix - Return to Paradise
Ewan McGregor - Trainspotting
Vince Vaughn - Swingers

The mid to late 1990's was perhaps the best 5 year period ever for young actors, if not for movies period.
