I always wonder where he is. She never mentions him. I wonder if Birdie and Kathleen's mother were 'special friends'.

But you have a point. He did say they had a date but he couldn't really remember what they actually did together. He could have legitimately forgot or just pretended to forget so he could keep an affair hidden. He did after all have that little girl who was Joe's aunt.
