SCRIPT

i'm a huge fan of this movie. i've seen it countless times since the very firts view at the theatre back in january 1999.
reading the thread about how the movie could have been better, i have to agree that the movie should have provided some back-ground about the minor characters like george and christina, especially in the last part of the movie.

so i searched for the script and i found it here:

http://cdn.preterhuman.net/texts/movie_and_TV_scripts/published_movie_scripts/PDF_versions/You%27ve%20Got%20Mail.pdf

there are many scenes and storylines that were cut from the film, especially about frank, george, christina and patricia. the ones regarding patricia are pretty lame if you ask me (but i finally got why the lady in the elevator was called veronica grant in the credits!), but the ones about george and frank are cute (and this shows that the roof-killer was part of a bigger side-storyline).

do you think some of the deleted scnes should have been part of the final cut or do you just love the movie the way it is?

I think it would have made a poor movie if that screenplay had been filmed and released uncut. My opinion is that romantic comedies don't work if they rival Lawrence of Arabia in length. However, as something to read, that script had some nice bits (along with a few clunkers, like the whole "famous reclusive author" storyline). E.g., it was interesting to see that Kathleen wasn't just stating some random prejudice when she told Joe she couldn't be with a man who owned a boat.
