Was there an earlier, more serious version of this movie?

I think I saw this same plot, with much of the same imagery from a movie that might have been made in the late 1970s or 1980s. But I don't remember it having "comic" moments as this movie does. I watched Ravenous (1999) last night and was disappointed.

I've seen it twice now and while amusing it could have so much more impact is it wasn't this damned comedic for the most part.
Black Comedy I love don't get me wrong (Happiness is one of my favorite films) but in this movie it takes away from what could have been 1. a great movie and 2. a great Wendigo movie.

I would say Bone Tomahawk has the same theme and the more of a serious horror movie

- And I thought was ugly and squalid because of it. Not a bad film by any means and I somewhat enjoyed it (aside from THAT scene), but I love the comedy in Ravenous- it brings a surreality to the proceedings that elevates it above a typical horror movie.

Indeed. The comedy works brilliantly with the horror, much like in Scream. The music also adds a playful absurdity to what is an absurd tale. Despite this, the film cuts deep with its savagery, surprises with its twists, and disturbs with its portrayal of evil.
