The final scene...?


Just finished watching for the first time.
The ending is sort of ambiguous.
The "dreamer" in me wants to believe that the ship carrying Viola really did sink, with her being the only survivor and finding her way back to Shakespeare. The realist in me says otherwise.

Read Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. It starts out with a shipwreck with one passenger, a woman named Viola, who is the lone survivor. Shakespeare -- at least the one in this movie -- was a realist. He knew he would never see Viola again. But he could always see her as she was when he knew her. He imagined that the ship carrying her to the new world sank and she was the only survivor...
