Speaking for myself, I don't hate the movie (I have it on DVD), but I can understand why other people would.

Eg. The priest tells Jericho to leave the church, then closes the door. So what does Jericho do? Opens the door and follows him. WTF?

The cliched jumping cat scare. Lazy writing.

The guy hanging off the ceiling in the hospital, and they just stand there staring at him. Silly.

But at least it's not boring. It's a good bad film.

The cat scene the script at least pokes fun at itself "How did I know a cat was going to be inthere"

I do not understand the hate AT ALL, especially from Arnie fans. This movie has some dumb moments, I cringe when Arnie tries to "cry" but to me all films are viewed as a whole. Most people seem to let a few stupid parts ruin the movie for them, I ignore the stupid parts and enjoy the entertaining parts. Any fan of Arnold's should understand this so I don't get why this movie in particular had such backlash. Actually in almost every way it's quite a well polished movie with some stupid writing decisions. It reminds me of when my Mother judges an entire movie by whether or not she liked how it ended.

It's just nitpicking people, or people that HEARD it was bad and decided to agree before they even saw it just to join the common consensus.

The few people I know, that hated it, hated it simply because of Arnold's character. He was a burned out, regular "Joe" and was completely depressed and stuff. They said that kind of role for Arnold is just totally wrong and they couldn't stand it.
I thought it was ok, but I do see their point. It just didn't work for him.

i must be one of the few people who thought the movie kicked ass. it was a complete deconstruction of the arnie stereotypical character and i personally thought it worked brilliantly - that scene in the alley when arnie is finally beaten up despite bieng very strong just shows or hints at the idea that mortal man cannot beat the devil.

so, for all arnie's asskicking abilities he can only fight back when he has faith in good or whatever. the movie also has a stunning performance from gabriel byrne as satan - his acting is top notch. rod steiger is also effective as is kevin pollak as the sidekick that u feel for because satan clearly got the better of him.

it's not without it's flaws this movie but for it to have such a low score on rotten tomatoes is very unfair. let's not forget peter hyams direction which is fantastic. i love how his films are always dark. check out his film narrow margin with gene hackman - it's brilliant. he even made van damme halfway respectable in timecop.

Y'know, kid... you got a helluva knack for killin' a conversation

Loved the movie, surely there were some cliches in it but for me, they only add to the humor. It's just people picking on about every little thing they don't like instead of trying to enjoy the movie.

Think a lot of people thought the idea of Arnold Schwarzenegger fighting Satan was ridiculous.
