Why does she agree to do the photoshoot?

It seemed quite irrelevant to her career as an actress, and if doing a rape scene already made her feel uncomfortable, why would she agree to appear nude in a magazine? It escapes me.

reply

I always assumed she was doing everything she could to get away from her pop star persona.

Plenty of actresses have done nude photo shoots and it didn't hurt their career.

See you in another life, brother.

It's the same reason all those Disney child actresses grow up and then pose half-naked for men's magazines: they want to shed their goody-goody image and have people consider them as grown-ups. They believe it will help them land meatier roles, because once the Disney train drops you off at the last stop, you have to earn your cash somewhere else.

I think a big reason is obligation towards her agents. It is apparent that they have done a lot to help her in her career and she doesnt want to disappoint them by saying no. I think I remember a scene in the film where it is obvious that the male agent (can't remember his name) almost humiliates himself in order to get her a part in that tv-show. She also says so herself when she is having her breakdown, that she didn't want to do it, but that she didn't want to disappoint those who are helping her.

It suddenly occurs to me that Madonna would've (or did) go this route back in the early 90s (though she didn't stop being a pop singer of courrse).

There is something weird about answering a 4 and half year old comment... But I guess this is the power of the internet, how timeless it is...

I really think the photo-shoot was a weird scene, being quite honest. I don't recall many upcoming actress being okay with a full frontal nude photoshoot, specially if you consider the fact that there are even a close up. She basically went to a softcore porn shoot and not the "erotic kind" that some pop-stars go.

I always felt like it was just some fan service.

While I would agree to an extent, I don't consider it "just" fan service. It did serve a role in the story. It showed Mima trying to get away from her wholesome pop star image and of course it pushed Me-mania and Rumi even further over the edge.

You are sin.

Yes I think the idea is spot on, to show that she really has no "personality" and is just going with the punches... But the execution was simply too much, they could've toned it down, it would've made more sense.

reply

I have to disagree. If it'd been toned down, it wouldn't have the same impact. The whole movie was about making the audience feel uncomfortable with Mima's transition.

She agrees to do the photoshoot for the same reason she agreed to do the show-- to break away from a cutesy "pop idol" image. She also feels obligated to do so for her agents.

I saw an older comment claiming it's for fan service, but that just isn't so. It serves a story function: to show how Mima's attempts to eradicate her previous persona are only building up a new, equally false one.
