Argento's Deep Red...

I assume the title "Perfect Blue" is a reference to Argento's "Deep Red/Profondo Rosso." The idea of a Japanese Giallo movie is interesting, but I feel like Perfect Blue would have worked better as a live-action film. The killer also needed black gloves.

It's an adaptation of the novel which may or may not have been a reference. I was actually more reminded of Barelli's "The Perfume of the Lady in Black" (the heroine is haunted by her past self who wears a pretty dress; the attempted rape scene is extremely similar; she gets mysterious packages from a stalker(s)) and Fulci's "A Lizard in a Woman's Skin" (both of the nightmare sequences involve stabbing someone to death and later finding out that victim really has been murdered).

Someone attempted to make a live-action version called "Yume nara samete" which was apparently closer to the book but it wasn't well-received. I think Perfect Blue still works really well as an anime since it allows Virtua Mima to be animated more fluidly (e.g. how would they be able to film her jumping on the streetlights? or during the chase sequence at the end?).
