SWAN BLUE: WHY ‘BLACK SWAN’ ISN’T A REMAKE OF ‘PERFECT BLUE’

There's been some talk on how much Aronofsky borrowed/was inspired from Perfect Blue. Here's an article that deals with the question.

Darren bought the rights to Perfect Blue and then goes onto make Black Swan which has uncanny resemblances. Alarm bells are ringing...

He bought the remake rights so he could put a similar bathtub scene in Requiem for A Dream without facing copyright infringement...

It's not a 1:1 copy/remake but it's definitely inspired by it. Not to say the concept of a rising star trying so hard they start going crazy is wholly original and has never been done before Perfect Blue, but the way the directors showed the delusions and the breakdown with the berating images of their "inner selves", the MCs murdering/not murdering people they feel have impeded them and the finales involving giant shards of mirrors/glass,etc is all very similar.

Aronofsky probably really liked the film, but the celebrity cultures are very different in both countries. I mean we have paparazzi and stalkers but it's on a different scale and usually regulated to big time celebs with tons of security and this and that. In Japan the idol scene is broader in scale and can be very big or very small. The one constant is absolutely rabid fans and that's why you hear about nonsense like what's going on with Hirano or people going crazy at one of those small cons. so Aronofsky changed it and made the conflict solely about the MC while Kon had alot of external AS WELL AS internal drama.

So it's not a remake but definitely heavily inspired by Perfect Blue. Heck maybe even adding a color to the title maybe a reference to the film too...

There are many similarities...

My point is that, now that we have Black Swan, we no longer need a live action remake of Perfect Blue. Aronofsky, as steward of the rights and the talent, would be the man to do it, and in Black Swan he takes the best parts of Perfect Blue and turns them into something more.

Is BLACK SWAN The PERFECT BLUE Remake We’ve Been Waiting For?
