I know that this wasn't exactly 'girly' but when compared to other such anime with monsters and spirits etc. I think it's far more 'real'....
Anyone know of any other Anime which is similar to this film - either in terms of content and reality, or animation???

Um, I don't know what you mean by girly, but you should try "Millennium Actress" and "Tokyo Godfathers". “Millennium Actress” is actually a love story, so that may be what you are looking for. Both movies were directed by Satoshi Kon, who also directed “Perfect Blue”. “Paranoia Agent” from Satoshi Kon can also be seen on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, which includes the same suspense as “Perfect Blue”. If you want to watch a depressing anime film, try “Grave of the Fireflies” or “Barefoot Gen”, both of those are WWII films. “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke” are also very good, and especially child friendly. Unfortunately, that is all I can think of right now since most of the Anime I have seen is pretty action packed.

There are about a million and one soft porn anime, but if your after soft porn like Perfect Blue, as in women being raped, then I'm certainly not going to help you look for them.

I meant 'girly' as in not about ghosts and spirits and monsters etc. Stereotyping I know, but I couldnt think of another word to describe it - films more to do with relationships, family, school etc.
shareIF you mean a film about girls and their lives, or one aimed at a female audience they are called shoujo animes.
Whispers of the heart is a very good shoujo flick, it deals with relationships, school and family in one, it's by studio ghibli so the animation is stunning and the characters are deep and well written, but its not an intense as Perfect Blue and doesn't have the dark atmosphere or conflicts.

If you are after relationship/character driven anime then I would strongly recommend Fruits Basket. It's fluffy at times but emotional and definitely centred around characters.

There are as many genres and sub-grenres within anime as there is within any other kind of shows and movies.
If you want something serious, get Grave of the Firelies. If you want something girly, get Fancy Lala (which I actually consider to be Perfect Blue for preteen girls). If you want something insanely funny, get Jungle wa itsumo Hare nochi Guu. If you want something cool, get Cowboy Bebop.
The list goes on.

Most definately Urasawa Naoki's Monster. There is a manga format now, but you can download fansubs of it. It's 74 episodes long, and IMO better than Perfect Blue.
