Foster's terrible accent!!!

Were any other British people laughing out loud at Foster's attempted accent? Half the time I couldn't figure out what she was saying, it seemed so slurred. It was just totally bizarre, especially coming from such a great actress.

reply

I am sure you are not British but an American. All my British friends said Jodie speaks splendid British in this movie. If you read my article about my Special Encounter with Jodie Foster on this movie, I wrote my British friend direct comment to her accent right after meeting her in the set.

reply

Hey I'm Brittish and I think Jodie's acccent was good. I even thought she was a brittish actress. It was the the first time I had heard of her.

Hey, i JUST watched the movie, and I thought her accent was excellent. For a moment, I even forgot that she wasn't really British.

reply

Yep, I agree with everyone else here.
Her accent was bloody amazing.
There was not a single fault in her voice at all at any time.
I am British(well, half) and have lived in Britian all my life and that accent was as good as any other person you'd see in London.

Bad British accents:
- Winona Ryder - The Crucible
- Heather Graham - From Hell
THE WORST - Neve Campbell - Churchill The Hollywood Years

Good British accents:
- Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean
- Nicole Kidman - The Hours
THE BEST - Jodie Foster - Anna and the King

reply

With all due respect...

- Winona Ryder - The Crucible

Abigail Williams was American.

- Heather Graham - From Hell

Mary was Irish.

In real life. But what accent did Graham attempt to play her? A cockney accent, and a really bad one at that.

You couldn't figure out what she was saying? Did you have your fingers in your ears, because I understood everything perfectly fine. Slurred? Honestly!

reply

renee zellweger was good in brigit jones, and cate blanchet, but dat was irish or watever

reply

i thought that her accent was excellent though i am not british i have heard many other british accents for example rachel weisz and jodie foster sounds just as good as she does.

reply

I also thought her accent was badly done, but I could understand what she was saying. I'm not a big Foster fan however.

Even the most useless person can serve as a bad example.

reply

That proves again Foster is an outstanding actress.

Bad accent? Try Kate Hudson in The Four Feathers. Something to empty your stomach with.

reply

What proves again that she's a great actress? The bad accent?

I totally agree about Kate Hudsons accent in The Four Feathers, PUKE!

Even the most useless person can serve as a bad example.

reply

Are you serious? You actually though this was a bad accent? If I didn't know that Jodie Foster was American and I'd only seen her in this film, I'd think she was English in a second. It was spot on, she didn't slip up once. And I'm English by the way.

reply

Her accent WAS awful. It was inconsistent and stilted and detracted from the film. She never sounded American, she just sounded like she was trying to impersonate 5 different British accents at once.
So I for one agree with the thread topic, Jodie Foster should leave the English roles to real English actresses (or Nicole Kidman)

reply

I'm British, and I think her accent was good. If I didn't know, I would have assumed she was British.

I made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

reply

You are mad Doc. Martin, her accent was very well done for an American!
Perhaps not well enough to fool a linguist, but certainly very good indeed!

reply

I am British, and her accent was similar to the way people speak where I live.I thought it was extremely well done.

reply

I thought she did very well with the british accent, very convincing.

reply

I'm British. I though Foster's accent was good, but Gwenith Paltrow's accent in Sliding Doors was perfect.

reply

I'm British too and I thought Jodie's accent was pretty flawless. It wasn't exactly supposed to be contemporary, she was a well spoken educator from some time ago!

reply

The accent was ok for at least half the film. Not sure about the other half as was so bored I stopped watching.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love does v good accent though i wasnt around in 16th C England so cant be 100% sure.

reply

I swear Gwyneth Paltrow is British anyway!!??
I made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

reply

therealdocmartin: I can tell you are not British and do not assume what British accents are. Just look at all the posters from the British people, open out your mind. Do not pretent you know when you actuall do not!

reply

That's OK....English accents are faked anyway.

reply

English accents are fake - how do you mean?

I made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

reply

I find it amusing that the people on this thread who found Foster's accent to be terrible were non-British, while all of the British posters found Foster's accent to be flawless. While I'm not native, I did live in London for several years. I thought her accent was perfect.

reply

THANK YOU jim444!
Everyone who is non-british(especially american's)need to shut thier mouths.
Jodie Foster's accent was actually quite good.
You try to aquire a 16th century british accent and make it close to the real thing. I've been in several plays where I had to aquire such an accent and it's not easy.
*I'm american by the way*

reply

I'm not British OR American - but Finnish. XD I thought her accent was good.

I mean, there is no single correct "British accent". There are several - DOZENS - of accents spoken in Britain (Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, Sussex, Birmingham, Dorset, etc.). Foster might have spoken in one of them (or in a mix). People who claim her accent was "horrible" and "non-British" honestly need to learn that Britain is a "multi-accent" country.
