Isn't a governess and a teacher the same thing?

I have notice that some have said that Anna was a teacher and not a governess. Can someone tell me the difference between the two?

reply

A governness is hired by a family to teach their children. They are pretty much the same thing.

Thanks for the response.

As opposed to a nanny, who just looks after the kids and doesn't teach them scholastic stuff ... lol

Actually, governesses were basically a teacher and nanny in one. They not only taught the children academics, but arts and music and sometimes dance. They taught religion and morals, and helped raise them. It wasn't uncommon for a child to love their governess more than their own mother. Governesses spent vastly more time with the children than their own parents did, a thing that caused a lot of strife in those situations. Governessing was often terribly lonely, as one was above the servants but below the family. These (often young) women were between worlds. It didn't help that the children often loved the governess more than their own mother, yet another reason many of them were treated poorly by their employers.

Sorry, this is a old post, but I can't resist as governesses are a huge historical fascination (I'm an amateur Victorian-era scholar). I just had to help clarify^.^

The difference is the real Anna Leonowens was brought to Siam to be an ENGLISH teacher. No science, no history, no religion or geography, just English. The children had Thai teachers for the other subjects. For her to call herself a "governess" implies that she did more with the children than she really did. She didn't do anything but teach them a language. There was no "nannying" and no other type of subject taught.

Almost everything She wrote was completely fictitious and has been proven to be so many times.

I am so disillusioned by all this... next, I'll find out the opening scene in the cartoon version didn;t really happen---when the dragon attacked the boat & she sang "I Whistloe a Happy Tune"

reply

Don't worry, that bit's true.

I believe that the difference between governess and teacher is that the teacher only teaches, be it a language or all of the school subjects and the governess teaches and takes care of the child/children while basically becoming a companion and even replacing the mother to an extent.

Remember that during that period of time, it wasn't fashionable yet for the mother/father to take care of their children, they hired someone else to do it since it was bothersome for them in their super "busy" lives of visiting friends and having parties or whatever it is they entertained themselves by. As far as I understand it, Anna was only a teacher, especially since the kids had like 80 mothers and hundreds of servants to care for their everyday needs!

Thank you very much.
