Gollum planted them to make it appear as though Sam had ate the bread

Yes, we see Gollum dropping them on Sam's shoulder when he is asleep, but they're not visible on Sam's shoulder after Gollum wakes him until Gollum makes the statement I mentioned. I checked the scene carefully. Look for yourself.

We never get a full look at Sam's right shoulder until he's called out. You are nitpicking in the extreme.

A better question would be, how did they get on his shoulder if he was supposedly eating them? Was he using his shoulder as a makeshift table?
