have you been to the UCB theator?
their improve shows are amazing, i think some of the times i've gone its been funnier than anything on the show
the theater shows are great, i recommend sunday asssscat shows (you often see really great nyc comedians, as well as the original ucb), but the other groups like the swarm, respecto, and harold night performers are great, too.
