Used to love this film, now it just pisses me off

My own personal opinion...

1. Maximus disobeying Commodus? Why? At least feign loyalty, wait until later and plot secretly from within? No personal discipline for a General?

2. The film needed more set piece battles. Or at least montages of them, with beasts in the arena, or (for eg) dwarves fighting women, etc?

3. Why the zulu war chant during the confusing opening battle with the Germans?

4. Why has the film omitted the real Commodus' life- his mistress Martia; his mother?

5. Rome was far bloodier- this film was 'tame' compared to other Roman shows- and with sex/porn grafitti?

This was a chick flick disguised as a boy movie. That’s why it had minimal blood and violence. I would have murdered the emperor right in front of the little boy, no hesitation. Remember when women thought Crowe was sexy?

Spartacus ruined this movie for me.

I saw Gladiator the other day for the first time since I started watching Spartacus and you're 100% correct

reply

Good point. Spartacus Blood & Sand desensitizes the viewer, absolutely. It makes Gladiator look like a PG film. I can still watch these back to back and enjoy though.

reply

Pffft...”tame”?

Watch the director’s cut with the lions eating Christians.

While you’re at it see the director’s cut of Pearl Harbor too with bodyparts flying about during the attack and the tray full of severed fingers Jennifer Garner was grossed out by while looking for surgical tools.

Try to remember what you see at the THEATRE isn’t the only cut of a film.

Used to be.

Still is to me. Great performances, effects and score. Love it.

Love this response comeback..! One of the best..!

I enjoyed the dwarves fighting women part, lol!

I like that the movie doesn't need to show so much. People don't wanna use their own imagination I guess 🤷.
