this movie feels like pro wrestling
Gladiator feels like a pro wrestling storyline. The conflict between Maximus and Commodus feels like a conflict between a heel wrestling promoter and a babyface wrestler. Like pro wrestlers, Maximus fights other men in front of large crowds. It reminds me of Stone Cold Steve Austin going up against Vince McMahon in the late 1990s. The heel promoter will do anything to win and put every possible obstacle in the way of the babyface wrestler. He'll even get in the ring with the wrestler at some point at his own risk. The babyface wrestler is loved by the crowd and overcomes every obstacle.
