Rod Stieger as the judge was great

Best thing in the movie was acting from everyone; Denzel was great, but the small role that was really played well was by Rod Steiger...he was great in the 5 minute role that he had of the Judge....best thing was he acted so neutral, we all knew he was playing a neutral judge, but he did it with style...

Absolutely. I have to rewind that scene everytime and rewatch. Brilliant performance.

When Norman Jewison was looking for somebody to cast in that role he asked himself, "Who would I not want to see up there on that bench?" Naturally, he thinks of Rod Steiger as Gillespie in In the Heat of the Night, and with that Steiger is well-cast.

I guess I'm in the minority but in my OPINION there wasn't anything special about his acting that stood out.Now Denzel Washington is another story.Great performance by Denzel.
