The whole scene in the "hole". Seriously, why no Oscar?!?

I'd rate his performance ahead of that of Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey in American Beauty. But can't really say, as I didn't see the other nominess - Russell Crowe (The Insider), Richard Farnsworth (Straight Story), Sean Penn (Sweet and Lowdown).

I saw all of those movie besides Straight Story and the only performance that comes close is Russell Crowe for the insider,which was his best role in my mind. I still can't believe he didn't win for this or Malcolm X which I believe is his best role.

Denzel Washington was brilliant!! I loved this movie and knew nothing about it! Great story and as always a great performance by Mr. Washington!!

I have "heard" the only reason he did not get the Oscar was because the movie is based on a lie. They did not portray the TRUE Carter, and also most think he was guilty.
Denzel is BRILLIANT!!

that scene and the scene at the window where he talks to the lawyer are nothing short of amazing.

I completely agree! Denzel is brilliant and those 2 scenes sum that up. Although I definitely do not believe in Carters innocence for a minute, Denzel sure makes you wish he was!
