What was the significance of the infomercial? & why did the woman only watch this infomercial over and over?

Dumbest thing I ever heard of, that infomercial was supposed to be some kind of game show, the game show she was trying to lose weight to go on.

i read a collegiate paper on the original book today. it was written in 1978 and there, she likes to talk to commercials and likes them a lot. she adores cats and cute little boys and loves to live through commercials to appreciate them. the early line that ends the intro of "everything is nice at the end" is supposed to signify her love of "happy endings" on television but that was never really explored in the film.
